Chapter 4
“Melonie!” shouted Bianca from down the hall “Come here!”
Melonie grabbed her robe from behind her door and took off down the hall to find where Bianca was shouting from. She found her standing in the middle of her room holding two hangers both holding completely different blouses. One was light pink with a ruffled collar while the other was navy blue and very simple. “Which one?” Bianca asked as if it was a life or death question “I can’t pick!”
“The blue, I like that one best” Melonie smiled “I’ve got to go get ready myself.” And with that she was down the hall and into her room.
It didn’t take long for Melonie to dress, she had always been easy to please when it came to clothes. She was the complete opposite of Bianca, but she still had some fashion sense. After she finished getting dressed; her blazer, a pair of dark washed skinnies, a baby blue blouse and navy flats, she went on to do her hair and makeup. Quickly she put on light, pastel makeup and pulled her dark, wavy hair into a low pony with a sparkly flower pin.
Swiftly, Melonie descended the stairwell into the living room where Bianca was waiting on the couch scrolling through her phone. Bianca’s hair was curled slightly, cascading down her back and framing her small face perfectly. “You ready?” Melonie asked as she stepped off the last stair.
The two girls drove down the familiar rode, stopping only to pick up a to-go coffee. They giggled and Bianca warned Melonie about this group of girls that weren’t the nicest. Bianca had been going to school with them since they were 8 so she knew how to handle them but for someone like Melonie it could be a whole new story.
Bianca guided Melonie towards the front office to get settle and signed up for her classes. It didn’t take long but the school was big and Melonie was terrified. Finding her way to class wasn’t the only thing on her mind, she couldn’t stop thinking about Harry and how he had flat out asked her to be his girlfriend. Melonie had a hard enough time catching the attention of guys back home, never once did she imagine catching the eye of a pop star.
The halls were starting to fill with students travelling to their next class, not watching where she was going Melonie ran straight into a tall blonde with a trail of girls behind her. It was pretty obvious that this was the group Bianca had warned her about. “I’m so sorry!” exclaimed Melonie “I wasn’t watching, sorry.”
“You better be.” Scoffed the blonde as she walked away mumbling something that Melonie caught as ‘bitch’. Melonie tried her best not to let it get to her but she was never bullied as a kid, well not too badly.
Melonie first two classes finished smoothly, her teachers were nice and most of the people in her class were interested in the fact that she was from Canada. Some of the guys were being really flirty but it was only because she was different, new person new accent.
Classes ended for the day and Bianca and Melonie were heading towards Bianca’s car parked in the student lot. Bianca kept looking back cautiously, then she spotted the blonde girl from earlier. “Walk quicker.” Bianca whispered “Come on.” Melonie did just that not questioning why because she didn’t want to talk to that girl either.
“Bianca!” the blonde shouted angrily “I need to talk to you.”
“Oh god…” Bianca whispered, her voice becoming shaky “Yes Cynthia?”
You screw up one more time at cheer I’m kick your sorry ass off that squad faster than you can say bitch. You get that?” the blonde that now had a name, Cynthia, barked in Bianca’s face. She towered over Bianca, not that it was hard to but she was still intimidating. “Oh and make sure your little Canadian friend doesn’t come anywhere near me.” Melonie felt a slight twinge of pain as those words lingered in the air above them.
The girls climbed into the car, Bianca still clearly shaken up by the little chat with Cynthia. “Mel, please don’t say anything to my mom. She thinks everything is perfect at this school.” Bianca softly pleaded “Don’t take anything crap from that girl. I have and now she just uses it against me.”
The drive home from school was short and quiet. Bianca wasn’t her bubbly self but Melonie didn’t push her to talk knowing that it would probably pass. Melonie pushed to door open as the parked in the driveway and glided off towards the front door. Bianca followed close behind but didn’t say a word and just bolted up to her room with her books. Melonie did the same and skipped up the stairs to her room; backpack in hand.
Melonie sat with her math text open trying her hardest to understand the assignment, math was never her best subject, when her phone chimed beside her. She quickly reached for it and reading Harry :) across the front of her screen. Her face lit up and she answered it cheerfully. “Hey! What’s up?” Melonie beamed
“Nothing much, just wanted to call because I knew it was your first day.” Harry answered “How was it?”
“Crazy.” Melonie replied “So different from schools back in Canada. And this really mean girl came and yelled at Bianca. Which reminds me I’ve got to go check on her, she hasn’t come out of her room once since we got home.”
“I’ll let you go then.” Offered Harry “How about I come and pick you up at your house afterschool and we can go get some coffee or something?”
“I’d love that.” Exclaimed Melonie “See you soon.”
Melonie walked swiftly down the hallway until she got to Bianca’s room. Lightly she knocked on the door waiting for a response, when there was none she quietly pushed the door open and called for Bianca softly. Bianca walked out of her bathroom that was connected to her room. Her normally perfect hair was a stray, her eyes red and puff, and her cheeks splotchy. She looked like she had been crying for hours. When she saw Melonie standing in the doorway looking concerned she immediately pulled a smile onto her face, trying to hide whatever Melonie had seen. “Oh hi!” Bianca cheerfully chirped. “What’s up?”
“Have you been crying?” Melonie asked, not beating around the bush “Is this about Cynthia?”
“Mel, you don’t get it.” Bianca started
“Try me.” Melonie shot back, starting to get worried.
“She’s bullied me for 8 years.” Bianca explained “Never even trying to be nice. She’s gotten worse ever since I was voted co-captain for cheer with her. She has never been one to share the spot light and now this is just fuelling the fire. I can’t just give up the position, my mom was too excited because she had always wanted me to do that. It’s just I don’t want other too see me as weak so I cry here. I don’t need Cynthia seeing this because it will just give her more to feed off of.”
“Bianca, I’m sorry.” Melonie apologized “I should have said something earlier afterschool instead of cowarding from her.”
“It’s fine.” Bianca brushed off “Did Harry call?”
